Why a projecting flag gets seen

Signage flat against a building is only visible to someone already looking at the building. A flag projects out from the wall into the line of sight of people walking or driving along the street, so it is read from either direction and from much further away. On a busy retail strip it is often the difference between being found and being walked past.
